It's insulting to every reader that she would be so lazy as to simply slap a 'Yae' in front of gahara and imitate such an important battle. Yeah, spending an afternoon researching battles and actual lords would have been so tough. The infuriating thing is that she uses the feuds, anger, and tension that came from the battle of Sekigahara but apparently didn't want to learn anything about it. which is clearly just a ripoff of the real battle of Sekigahara. Now there is the infamous battle of Yaegahara from her book. If we had to read every time a character took a piss it wouldn't be interesting either. Include the quakes in exposition, don't stop the story to put them in. Maybe that's real, but it's also retarded. The characters are talking about something and then the author stops to make everything shake, then everyone has to acknowledge the quake, then we resume. All it does is randomly distract from the story. This would be informative of the climate and area, but it isn't - it's irritating. She apparently read somewhere that Japan gets a lot of earthquakes, so the characters experience them, constantly. Terrain/Geography/History This is pretty hard to F up but Hearn does it anyway. The conversations are flat and would fail if they were imitating normal conversation, in that they should be trying for feudal speech they fail astoundingly. It isn't emotional, even the character seems to know this, and it isn't realistic. There is a two-page dialogue about a characters past that is painfully bad. It's hard to tell because it is so blunt but she implies that they are saying something else. Language Other novels written about or in Japan (Shogun, to name one) have tried to successfully capture the way people spoke saying one thing and meaning another. So, okay, Hearn didn't do that justice base a book of a land and F up their religion, okay. But in Hearn's world everyone is predominantly Christian, or at least they worship a god an awful lot like the Christian god like looking down on suicide, which was a part of the way of life in Japan. It persecuted Christianity in the same way that Rome did it's teachings undermined the ruling order. This book is written as if Hearn simply googled Japan and then decided to write a book on it. I would think that it being set in Japan, Hearn would have learned anything about the place, but she apparently did not. Normally a bad book is just that, but this book is actually infuriatingly bad.įirstly, it's a fantasy book set in feudal Japan. I'll try to be as kind and heartfelt as possible.

Over the nightingale floor

Sister readily agrees to the idea by putting up a sign that says 'NO BOYS ALLOWED', but Mama says that the first thing about having a club is members. Mama suggests building a clubhouse exclusively for girls, and Papa adds to the idea by using an old climbing tree. Sister disagrees, but says that she can tear the boys limb from limb. As Papa and Sister head out the front door, Mama tells them both that while the boys are being unfair, girls act that way too, and adds that Sister can't make cubs want to play with her. She tells Papa how the boys aren't being fair, to which he agrees and decides to take Sister to the Bear Country Boys Club to make them let Sister join or he would destroy the clubhouse. Angered at her behavior, the boys put out a sign that says 'Bear Country Boys Club: NO GIRLS ALLOWED' out front and they let up the drawbridge. She greets them, then does her celebration dance. Sister then eyes a nearby thicket and goes there to find Brother and several other boy cubs on Berrybush Island at Frog Pond building a clubhouse. She looked at the dirt ring where they played marbles, and then went to look at the baseball field. She went to look at the tree she, Brother, and his friends climbed. On the third day, Sister wonders once more where the cubs went. The next day, Brother was not around, and Sister passed the time by having a tea party with her stuffed animals and reading books. She passed the time picking flowers and jumping rope with butterflies. One day, Sister went out to look for Brother and his playmates, but they were nowhere to be seen. Mama becomes worried that Sister was being a bad sport, as she celebrates every victory she got by cheering and doing cartwheels, leaving the boys angered. Mama and Papa later watch a group of boys play baseball with Sister. However, when Sister got older, she could outrun Brother and his friends, climb trees higher than them, and knock all of their marbles out of the game. She slowed the boys down while they were running, she couldn't climb a tree as high as them, and while playing marbles, the one Sister prepares to launch slips out of her hand. When Sister was a young cub, she always tagged along with Brother and her friends. Mama and Papa teach both the boys and Sister that being a sore loser, as well as a sore winner, is never a good thing. In retaliation, Brother and his friends create a club that prevents girls from joining. Eventually, Sister outperforms the boys in everything they do and goes as far as gloating about her victories. Brother, Cousin Freddy, and their friend get sick of Sister tagging along with them every time they played games.
