The number of physicians leaving clinical practice is skyrocketing, even as the push to “teach” professionalism in medical education still sometimes translates as just another reason to disparage those who recognize their personal needs. Still, there's no doubting that this book speaks to the contemporary era of medical training and practice. It's an idea that would probably make the profession's old guard shudder: Patients aren't here to serve our personal needs, the thinking goes. Jauhar's path through medical training becomes so personal at times that he adopts his own patients as his mirror: In your patients you can find yourself, he suggests. The writing here is unflinchingly raw, even with 10 years' hindsight. It is this clarity and honesty that make Intern a true contribution to the burgeoning literature of medical training. There's no bullying his way through the hard times, no glossing over his medical school buddy's suicide during intern year. Many trainees will recognize their own journey in Jauhar's account, thanks to the author's candid and sympathetic treatment of this dark side of doctoring. Eventually, because of a neck injury, he must ask for time off from internship. When internship begins to close in around him, midway through the year, he becomes clinically depressed. Jauhar himself brooded and struggled with uncertainty, not convinced that he picked right with internal medicine. There's the bumpy courtship with his now-wife Sonia, also a physician in training. There's the older brother – a breezy establishment type – who he admires, yet doesn't. There's the difficult immigrant father whom the author can't ever seem to please. However, Intern, unlike many of its predecessors, is also the compelling story of a young man whose medical career colors every corner of his life. Except for an incisive description of the night-float experience, this sort of thing has been done before, perhaps most memorably in Emily Transue's first book, On Call. At first glance Intern appears to offer much of the usual fodder, like stories of a young physician's discomfort with breaking bad news, his attempts to coax a Do Not Resuscitate order from a reluctant family, and the anxiety over running a Code Blue. A recent addition to this literature of medical training is Intern: A Doctor's Initiation, cardiologist Sandeep Jauhar's story of his residency at New York Hospital, New York, NY, in the late 1990s. Who hasn't written their memoir of becoming a doctor? The books are coming fast and furious these days.

His friend Moe was a very unusual character. In my opinion Damon must have had a tormented and depressing childhood, which caused him to be always angry and talking to himself. Burke kept changing the storyline and with it the people speaking and I found this very confusing, for example, Burke kept changing from Damon talking to himself, then suddenly the author, Burke, continuing on with the story. The Pig Boy was written in a very sophisticated way, which some people may like but I did not enjoy. So that is why I am keen to read the novel Pig boy by J.C. I believe that there will be many situations that I may be able to empathise with as a result of my many experiences in country towns. I have read the blurb and believe there will be many unexpected events as it explains that Damon, the protagonist, has a plan that he has devised which will cause him many problems in the future. I am expecting this book to be interesting and exciting after having read reviews about it in the past. The reason I have chosen this book is because I have never read a novel based on modern Australia. I have studied some literature relating to the bush, its past and have camped in the bush on several occasions. I chose this book because I am fascinated by Australian Literature. JC Burke has created an absolutely unforgettable cast of characters in Pig Boy, and I have no doubt that this confronting book will appeal to everyone who's ever felt like the world is against them. From his disinterested mother to the school principal who’s had enough, and especially the Miro the Pigman who takes the struggling Damon under his wing. But it’s not just Damon who shines in Pig Boy – all of the characters are fascinating, and work together to build a claustrophobic world that produces a young man like Damon. Despite the angry outbursts, despite the shell he wears, you can see why he’d feel the way he does. He's a complicated character, and you can't help but feel for Damon. He isn’t the sort of kid you’d expect to find helping little old ladies with their shopping. I haven’t been this impressed with a main character in quite some time. That way he’ll learn everything he needs to know to make things right. Then he’s going to work for the Pigman hunting pigs. When he's finally expelled from school on his eighteenth birthday, Damon just keeps on being angry, except now he has a plan – he’s made a list of names, and he’s going to get his firearms license. Everyone is determined to see Damon as trouble, and so he is. School is no safehaven: Damon is a smart kid who excels at writing, but unless his talents lie in sport, none of his teachers want to know about it. Angry at his friend Moe for the way he laughs. Angry at Andrew Parker and Darren Geraghty who antagonise him at school, making pig noises and calling him Damoink. Angry at his mother for never getting out of bed.
